He was married three times — Judy Nye (1960–64), Jane Shirley Smith (1965–88) and Jane Fonda (1991–2001). In 2018 he disclosed a diagnosis of Lewy body dementia. Over his life he received many honors, including TIME’s Man of the Year (1991), induction into the Television Hall of Fame (1991), a Peabody (1997) and the Edward R. Murrow Award (2000). Turner is survived by five children, 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; Turner Enterprises announced his passing and media leaders reflected on his lasting influence.
