Speaking at the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 3, a day after receiving the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement, Clooney recalled volunteering to help Malick restart his career and taking a part in The Thin Red Line. He says he shot for months in Australia, only to find most of his work removed in the final cut. Clooney reflected on the director’s control, noting that a filmmaker can reshape or remove an actor’s performance — and laughed about seeing himself only in the film’s very last scene.
